Good morning snow hounds and ski bunnies! It’s hump day, but you wouldn’t know it in Crested Butte. It’s just another day in paradise and that can only mean one thing…time to head for the slopes! Treat yourself to a few runs and spend the middle of your week renewing the enjoyment you get from skiing and riding the best terrain in the country.
Today we’re skiing and riding on 106 trails with 15 lifts up and running. Terrain features, gentle beginner terrain, intermediate cruisers, steeps, and the most lift-accessible Extreme terrain in the country...we’ve got something for everyone from The Peak to Third Bowl! 480 acres of our terrain is coated with a fresh layer of corduroy this morning, thanks to the groomers of Colorado’s Best Corduroy. The springlike weather of late has definitely made for some really run, carvable conditions, and we are still reaping the benefits of the twenty inches of snow we’ve gotten in the last seven days.

At 5:45 am, it’s a brisk 12 degrees, but you can expect perfect March weather in Crested Butte today- the high temperatures will be just under 40 degrees and we’ll have those infamous Colorado bluebird skies today.

We’ve got some great events happening this week. The 12th Annual Telemark Freeskiing Competition begins tomorrow, Thursday, March 20. The two-day big mountain event will attract over 100 free heelers, including the biggest names in the telemark industry. This event is unique to Crested Butte and there will be free telemark demos and specialty clinics during this celebration of telemarking. Online registration for this event is now closed; on-site registration will take place on Thursday preceding the event. Visit www.skicb.com or call 970-349-2217 for more information on the 12th Annual Telemark Freeskiing Competition.

This major event will culminate with the ever-popular Al Johnson Memorial Uphill/Downhill Telemark Ski Race. The AJ, as it is fondly referred to by locals, begins with a mass start of approximately 200 men and women. The competitors will free-heel up and down some of Crested Butte’s expert terrain, and must finish with both skis and poles, even if broken. What makes this event really special is that the majority of the racers dress in costume for the race. Totally Crested Butte style, there are no limits to the creativity you’ll witness at the AJ. A great time for participants and spectators alike- don’t miss this one of a kind event on Sunday at 1 pm at the bottom of the North Face Lift.

We’re in the middle of a fantastic week of March- the sunshine and slopes are calling all skiers and riders. I’ll see you on the hill.
