Shiatsu is a Japanese style of therapeutic massage that initiates the whole body into maintaining good health. This therapy helps the body stay in balance by working with chi to keep it flowing. Finger pressure and stretching are done to send chi where it is needed. A body that is in balance with chi flowing freely means mental clarity and physical wellness. Shiatsu also promotes relaxation and rejuvenation. It is beneficial for everyone. This is achieved through different variances of pressure and stretching applied to the body’s meridians and energy channels. Shiatsu holistically awakens the body’s chi, leaving one feeling they have tapped into their energetic life force.
The art was given its name around the turn of the century, though its origins are ancient. It is a unique combination of classical Oriental medical theory, whose history stretches back to the beginnings of acupuncture 4000 years ago. The life force known as chi flows in connected channels, or meridians, throughout the body. Each meridian is linked to an organ or psychophysical function, and its chi can be contacted at certain points along its path: these are the acupuncture points. In health, a balanced condition prevails, and the chi flows smoothly along the meridians, like fuel through a pipeline, supplying and maintaining all parts of the body. But when the body has been weakened by an immoderate lifestyle, emotional stress or injury, the chi no longer flows smoothly, becoming deficient in some areas and excessive in others and a state of disease exists.
Most of us fall into the category of “half-healthy” people – in other words, our condition is not completely balanced. We may be liable to colds or stomach upsets, or get moody and depressed. For such “half-healthy” people or simply as a preventive against sickness, shiatsu is the ideal remedy. It involves no drastic intervention in the body process, since it simply rebalances the chi so that the body can heal itself. This is achieved through different variances of pressure and stretching applied to the body’s meridians and energy channels. Shiatsu holistically awakens the body’s chi, leaving one feeling vitalized having tapped into their energetic life force.
Jessica attended East-West College of Healing Arts in Portland, OR. She focused her studies toward Massage for Common Injury, Sports Massage, and Zen Shiatsu. The art of Zen Shiatsu resonated the most for Jessica, and she took it further to integrate the pressure points, stretching and theories of Zen Shiatsu into massage. In 1999 she moved to Crested Butte and opened Shiatsu Massage and has maintained her business for over 10 years.

Jessica has extended her studies into Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy, Ayurvedic massage, Chi Gong and has been a Kundalini Yoga instructor at Yoga for the Peaceful for the past three years.

When scheduling your appointment for a massage, the assessment will be done on how you are feeling that day, history of chronic pain, and what you would like from your massage. Are you looking for more relaxation or thinking to focus on specific areas. Jessica specializes in working on the neck and helping to relieve chronic neck pain.
